moral outcry against catholic university

Benedictine University, located just outside Chicago in Lisle, Illinois is doubling down on its campus ministry’s scandalous decision to observe the so-called “International Trans Day of Remembrance” last week. Benedictine University was founded in 1887 by Benedictine monks at the adjacent St. Procopius Abbey. The school markets itself as a “Catholic University in the Benedictine Tradition.”

Benedictine is not to be confused with Benedictine College in Atchinson, Kansas, which welcomed traditionalist Catholic Harrison Butker for its commencement speech in 2024.

Events like a Catholic university’s campus ministry hosting a “Transgender Day of Remembrance” highlight a troubling shift in priorities within higher education. Institutions that were once dedicated to faith, tradition, and academic excellence are increasingly embracing ideological activism. This raises concerns about whether universities are staying true to their founding missions or instead becoming platforms for political and cultural agendas that many families feel undermine traditional values.

In education, this trend often translates into classrooms and campus programs that prioritize identity politics over core academics. When schools focus on symbolic gestures or advocacy events, they risk diverting attention and resources away from improving literacy, math proficiency, and critical thinking—areas where student performance has already been declining nationwide. For conservative parents and taxpayers, this signals a lack of accountability and a misalignment with the purpose of education: preparing young people with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

There is also a broader cultural impact. By elevating controversial social issues, universities set the tone for K–12 education, where similar initiatives trickle down into curricula and student programming. This can leave parents feeling sidelined, as their values are ignored in favor of progressive agendas. Conservatives argue that education should be rooted in shared civic principles, respect for tradition, and academic rigor—not in divisive cultural movements that erode parental rights and community standards.

Ultimately, the concern is that higher education’s embrace of activism undermines trust in the system. Families who expect universities to uphold faith-based missions or focus on scholarship see these events as evidence of misplaced priorities. For conservatives, the solution lies in restoring local control, emphasizing transparency in how schools use their resources, and re-centering education on its true purpose: cultivating knowledge, responsibility, and respect for enduring values.
