Newly released U.S. intelligence documents show that China made detailed plans to turn the American public against President Trump before the 2020 election. These papers were kept secret for years and only recently declassified.

What China Planned to Do

According to the declassified intelligence summaries, China wanted to damage public support for President Trump and his administration. They created a list of messages they hoped would spread across the country.

The planned messages included:

  • Making people believe the economy was failing
  • Encouraging protests, demonstrations, and even looting so the country looked out of control
  • Increasing public anger toward the President
  • Spreading the idea that the President was not fit to lead
  • Trying to make people lose trust in the President and his government

China also planned to push messages about racial tension and fights between the President and Congress. The goal was clear: make Americans doubt their President and create more division.

How They Planned to Spread the Messages

The documents say China planned to use major social media platforms to push these ideas. The list included TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

They intended to use both regular accounts and hidden influencers, people who would spread the messages without clearly showing they were working with China. The idea was to reach large numbers of Americans quietly and shape what people were seeing and talking about online.

U.S. officials have long warned about Chinese efforts to use social media for influence. You can read official background on foreign influence operations from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence here:

Collecting American Voter Information

China did not stop at messages. The declassified documents show that China also obtained voter registration records from at least 18 U.S. states.

This data included personal information on registered voters. According to the intelligence summaries, China planned to use the records for “person matching.” In simple terms, they wanted to identify important people in America and study public opinion related to the election. The information was treated as a tool for further targeting and analysis.

Questions Inside the U.S. Government

Some of the most interesting material comes from internal government emails written in November 2020.

In these messages, intelligence officials expressed concern that reports prepared for the President were being changed. One official wrote that analysis appeared to be “deliberately massaged” so that it said less about election-related threats. Other emails asked why the focus on these dangers seemed to be reduced and who was making that decision.

These emails show that some people inside the system worried the full picture was not being clearly shared at a very important time.

Why This Matters for President Trump

These documents are directly relevant to President Trump. They show that China did not just watch the 2020 election from a distance. Beijing developed specific plans to weaken him, reduce public support for him, and collect detailed information on American voters and officials.

The papers do not say China successfully changed any votes. What they do show is a clear and focused effort to damage President Trump’s standing with the American people and gather information that could be used against U.S. leaders.

When a foreign government creates detailed plans to turn the public against a sitting U.S. president, collects voter data from many states, and U.S. officials raise concerns that the threat was being softened in official reports, it is something every American should understand.
