Teacher Unions: How about you pull the kids out of low-digit proficiency and leave sexuality to the parents Domain?

Teachers unions — nationally and here in Kane County — should start by cleaning up their own house. Across the country, millions of children are not proficient in reading or math, and Illinois mirrors that crisis. Kane County families see it firsthand: too many students are struggling with the basics while union leadership spends its energy elsewhere. When academic proficiency is collapsing, unions should be laser‑focused on restoring rigorous instruction, strengthening curriculum, and demanding accountability for student outcomes.

Instead, national unions and their local affiliates have increasingly pushed schools into sensitive areas that belong with parents, especially around sexuality and identity. These are personal, values‑based matters that families — not political organizations — are responsible for guiding. When unions pressure districts to take over these conversations, they undermine parental authority and create unnecessary conflict. Kane County parents want schools to teach reading, writing, and math, not replace families in deeply personal decisions.

The deeper problem is that teachers unions have drifted from education into political activism. National union leaders openly promote ideological agendas, and those priorities trickle down into local districts, including Kane County. Rather than championing academic excellence, discipline, and real results, unions devote time and resources to cultural battles that distract from learning. If they truly want to serve children, they must return to their core mission: raise proficiency, respect parents, and leave politics at the door.
