Community Member accuses group of child grooming

The situation unfolding around the TPUSA‑affiliated student group in Maryland is deeply troubling for anyone who cares about fairness, student leadership, and the right of young people to participate in civic life without intimidation. These students organized an event with parental permission, set reasonable safety boundaries, and clarified that they are an independent 501(c)(3) club—not an arm of the school system. Yet despite their transparency, they’ve been met with accusations ranging from “grooming” to fabricated claims about adult felons running their group. When a 17‑year‑old student has to publicly defend himself against baseless allegations, something has gone seriously off the rails.

What’s even more concerning is the escalation of these accusations into a report to Child Protective Services. Invoking CPS—an agency meant to protect children from actual abuse—over a student‑led political event sets a dangerous precedent. It weaponizes a government agency against teenagers who simply hold viewpoints some adults dislike. The student leader described receiving “hate” online and feeling compelled to restrict access to protect attendees. Instead of supporting these young people for taking responsible steps, critics have amplified fear and suspicion, creating an environment where students are punished for engaging in the democratic process.

This pattern of harassment should concern every parent, taxpayer, and community member. If students aligned with TPUSA can be targeted with misinformation, hostility, and government investigations simply for hosting an event, then no student group is safe from ideological retaliation. Civic engagement should be encouraged, not policed. These young people deserve the same respect and protection afforded to any other student organization, regardless of political leanings. The message being sent right now is chilling: if your views don’t align with certain adults in the community, you may be smeared, intimidated, or reported to authorities. That is not how a healthy, pluralistic school environment should function.
