Chicago School Board Raises Taxes Yet Again And Parents Are At A Breaking Point
CPS Board are Deaf to parents struggles in this latest tax hike

Public school boards across Illinois have grown increasingly deaf to the financial realities facing the very families they claim to serve. While parents are tightening their budgets, juggling rising costs of living, and making sacrifices to keep their households afloat, school boards continue to approve tax hikes and spending increases with little regard for the burden placed on local taxpayers. Instead of listening to parents who are already stretched thin, these boards behave as though families are an endless source of revenue—an ATM they can tap whenever their latest initiative needs funding.
At the same time, the mismanagement of public education dollars has become impossible to ignore. Despite record-high budgets, student achievement remains stagnant or declining, absenteeism is rising, and essential academic supports are underfunded. Money is routinely funneled into administrative expansion, consultants, and ideological programs that do nothing to improve classroom learning. Parents see the disconnect clearly: they are paying more every year, yet getting less in return for their children’s education.
What frustrates families most is the lack of accountability. When parents raise concerns about wasteful spending or question why tax dollars aren’t reaching the classroom, they are dismissed, ignored, or treated as obstacles rather than partners. School boards often operate behind layers of bureaucracy, making decisions with minimal transparency while insisting that taxpayers simply “trust the process.” This attitude only deepens the divide between parents and the institutions funded by their hard-earned money.
Ultimately, the issue is not just financial—it’s a matter of respect and responsibility. Parents expect school boards to steward public funds wisely, prioritize academic excellence, and recognize the real economic pressures families face. Instead, too many boards have chosen to protect their own agendas rather than the interests of students and taxpayers. Until that changes, families will continue to feel unheard, overburdened, and increasingly motivated to demand a new direction for public education.
