Sexual predators can ID and contact children within minutes

Parents in Kane County are confronted with an alarming truth: predators can reach children on major gaming platforms almost instantly. During a live demonstration on The Shawn Ryan Show, online safety activist Schlep created a decoy Roblox account and was contacted within seconds by strangers sending sexually explicit messages. For local families who assume platforms like Roblox are harmless entertainment, this is a wake‑up call. Children who think they’re simply playing a game can be targeted before they even understand what’s happening, and parents in our own communities must recognize how quickly these dangers unfold.

The interview also exposes the emotional and psychological harm children can face online. Schlep shared that he was groomed on Roblox at age 12, coerced into disturbing acts, and driven to a suicide attempt by 15. He and Ryan also encountered a user‑created reenactment of the Sandy Hook school shooting—content that no child should ever see, yet is accessible on a platform widely used by elementary‑age kids. Even though Roblox removed the game quickly and insists on strict policies, the fact that such violent and traumatizing material can be created at all shows the limits of moderation. For Kane County parents, this highlights a painful reality: harmful content and dangerous individuals can slip through even the most publicized safety filters.

For families across Kane County, the message is unmistakable: tech companies cannot be the first line of defense for our children. With lawsuits mounting and activists exposing the gaps, parents must take an active role—supervising gameplay, setting boundaries, and having ongoing conversations about online behavior and safety. Children need to know how to recognize danger, how to respond, and when to come to a trusted adult.
