parents and students get rude awakening

Grade inflation is creating a dangerous illusion of success for students across the country, and Kane County is no exception. While many high schoolers graduate with GPAs that suggest excellence, standardized testing paints a different picture: only a fraction demonstrate true proficiency in math and reading. Parents in Kane County may believe their children are excelling based on report cards, but ACT and SAT scores often reveal gaps in fundamental skills. This disconnect means that even students with straight A’s may arrive at college unprepared for rigorous coursework, undermining both their confidence and their future opportunities.

For Kane County families, the consequences are particularly troubling. Students who appear to be thriving in local schools may struggle to qualify for scholarships or advanced programs once their standardized test scores are considered. A child who could have earned significant financial aid with stronger preparation instead faces higher tuition costs and mounting debt. Meanwhile, grade inflation discourages both struggling students—who are passed along without intervention—and advanced learners, who are denied the challenge needed to reach their full potential. This cycle leaves Kane County parents frustrated, as taxpayer dollars fund schools that fail to deliver the academic accountability they promise.

The solution lies in restoring rigorous benchmarks that provide honest assessments of student ability. For Kane County, reintroducing standardized measures like the SAT and expanding AP opportunities would ensure that grades reflect real mastery rather than inflated averages. Such reforms would help identify which students need support, which deserve recognition, and which are truly prepared for higher education. Without these changes, Kane County risks producing graduates burdened with debt and degrees that lack value, while parents and taxpayers continue to shoulder the cost of a system that prioritizes appearances over outcomes.
