Parents should also recognize that data collected through screenings does not simply disappear after the questionnaire is completed. Screening results may be entered into student support systems, shared among school personnel, analyzed by third-party companies, or used to identify students for additional interventions and services. Families have a responsibility to review consent forms carefully, ask detailed questions, and exercise their rights to inspect records and decline participation when they are not comfortable with the process. Will these results of perceived interventions be an issue that places government authority over parental authority?
At a time when student data collection is expanding, Illinois parents must remain informed advocates for their children. Protecting a child's privacy requires more than signing forms; it requires active engagement and oversight.
