Pritzker Hesitates on School Choice Bill

Illinois families lose out if Pritzker continues with partisan politics

Illinois families are now watching a valuable federal school tax credit slip through their fingers—not because the program lacks merit, but because Governor J.B. Pritzker and Democratic leaders in Springfield are treating children’s education like a political bargaining chip. While families across half the country are preparing to benefit from a federal credit worth up to $1,700 for donations to scholarship organizations, Illinois parents are being told to wait, to accept uncertainty, and to trust a governor who has repeatedly stalled or blocked school‑choice efforts. The result is simple: families who need help with tutoring, therapies, books, and academic support may get nothing, not because the federal government said no, but because state leadership refuses to say yes.

What makes this loss even more alarming is that the program is designed to help all students—public, private, and homeschool—without draining a single dollar from public school budgets. It gives parents the ability to support their children’s learning needs directly, especially in a state where reading and math proficiency continue to lag. Yet instead of embracing a no‑cost opportunity to lift students up, Pritzker is following the same playbook used by Governor Gavin Newsom in California: block school‑choice pathways, protect political allies, and keep families dependent on a system that continues to underperform. The message to parents is unmistakable—politics comes first, your children come second.

For Illinois taxpayers, the frustration is justified. They are watching other states move forward while their own governor drags his feet, risking millions in potential scholarships that could transform students’ futures. This isn’t fiscal responsibility or thoughtful policymaking; it’s political obstruction that leaves families paying more and receiving less. If Illinois opts out because of Pritzker’s hesitation, the consequence is clear: children in other states will receive the benefit of Illinois taxpayers’ generosity, while Illinois families are left behind once again.
