Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, a law that says if a baby is born alive during or after an attempted abortion, that child must receive the same medical care as any other newborn. The law also creates serious criminal penalties for anyone who intentionally causes the death of a baby born alive. Supporters say every child deserves a chance to live and receive medical care, no matter the circumstances of their birth.
Illinois has taken a very different path. In recent years, the state has expanded abortion access, increased taxpayer funding, and become a destination for women traveling from other states to obtain abortions. Because of these policies, Illinois is often described by both supporters and critics as the nation's leading abortion destination. While Missouri lawmakers are strengthening protections for babies who survive an abortion, Illinois leaders continue to focus on making abortion more available and accessible across the state.
The contrast could not be clearer. Missouri's newest law reflects the belief that every baby born alive deserves medical care and legal protection. Illinois continues moving in the opposite direction by expanding abortion services and promoting the state as a place where abortions are widely available. As neighboring states head down separate roads, citizens are left to ask an important question: Which path places the greatest value on human life? The answer will shape not only public policy but also the moral character each state leaves for future generations.
