This case is a reminder that religious liberty is not a second-class right. When public officials single out people or organizations because of their faith, they risk violating constitutional protections and exposing taxpayers to costly legal consequences. In Everett, Washington, school officials imposed restrictions on a Bible-based educational program that were not applied equally to other groups, leading to a federal lawsuit and court intervention.

The consequences extended beyond the courtroom. As part of the settlement, the school district agreed to issue a public apology, provide religious liberty training for board members, revise district policies, and pay $275,000 in attorney fees. The apology acknowledged that comments and actions by district leaders were offensive and negatively affected families' ability to exercise their faith.

The lesson for public institutions is clear: government entities must treat citizens equally regardless of their religious beliefs. When officials allow personal bias or hostility toward religion to influence policy, they undermine constitutional freedoms and create legal and financial liabilities for the communities they serve. Respecting religious rights is not merely about avoiding lawsuits; it is about upholding the fundamental principle that all Americans deserve equal treatment under the law.
